Taking your driving test

People paying for driving lessons and reading theory books in anticipation of taking their driving test are usually quite nervous in regards to taking the plunge and actually booking the test. The nerves comes as a natural thing as they are scared of failure and many book ‘just one more lesson’ in the hope that their nerves will fade and they will feel they’re ready for the test. But what if this never happens?

Although the best advice is too book your test when you feel ready, if you’re feeling nervous about it your driving instructor should advise you on whether he or she feels you’re capable of passing the test or not. Their reputation relies on the success of their pupils so they will probably not advise you to try before they feel you are ready for it. However, some test centres are very busy so depending on where you live you might have to book six weeks in advance.

The standard fee for driving test is currently £62 or £75 depending on when you want to take it and you can either download an application form from the Driving Standards Agency yourself or get your instructor to help you. As you don’t actually need to take any lessons through a licensed company you can of course apply to take this test whenever it suits you.

You can take the test in any insured and roadworthy car you like as long as it has L plates but most people who take lessons using a licensed company use their driving instructor’s car. Remember to bring your theory test pass with you as well as your provisional licence as you won’t be allowed to drive without them.

At the actual test you will firstly be asked a few questions regarding vehicle safety before you’re permitted to drive off. During your drive you will be assessed on how you drive and you will have to perform at least two prescribed manoeuvres such as reverse parking. A driving test will usually take around 40 minutes and you will be told straight away whether you’ve passed or not. If you do fail it’s because you either had one dangerous fault or more or more than 15 minor faults. But if you do fail make sure to ask the assessor for feedback so you can learn from your mistakes. You have to wait 10 days until you’re allowed to take the test again.

And once you’ve passed the test a full licence will be sent to you within four weeks but you can of course hit the roads straight away. And if you do pass, you can perhaps swap the Vauxhall Corsa used by your driving school with your own Vauxhall Corsa. There are plenty of dealers around and you can test drive a used Vauxhall Corsa, Gloucester and other places. By getting a similar car to what you’ve been driving during your lessons, you will at least feel that you master the vehicle and a smaller vehicle is probably a good idea to drive until you feel more capable and experienced.
